| Company history Winchester Rifles have been produced it New Haven, CT since 1855 when Oliver Winchester formed the Volcanic Arms Company. In 1931, the company became part of the Winchester-Western group of the Olin Corporation. Olin still owns the Winchester trademark today and produces Winchester brand ammunition. U. S. Repeating Arms Company was created in 1981, by a group of former Winchester employees, to manufacture the classic Winchester Rifles and Shotguns under license from Olin. Since 1991, the company has been owned by a French corporation GIAT and The Herstal Group of Belgium. U. S. Repeating Arms ceased production on March 31, 2006. The classic lever action rifle, used by The Rifleman, Jimmy Stewart and John Wayne, was still being produced until the time the company closed. | | |
